LOIS KLASSEN makes her first contribution to NSL&G by illustrating and narrating Key_ART_Words, a useful and usable lexicon of “industry and culture”. Klassen is an artist and writer whose practice has taken up the nature of social, political and economic processes in art. Her artworks have most recently been hosted by YACTAC, Anvil Centre, Santa Fe Art Institute, Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art and more. Her writing has appeared in Fillip Magazine, Border Crossings, Public Journal and more. She is currently completing doctoral research in the Cultural Studies Program at Queen’s University on the topic of ethics and art about human migration. KATE BARRY contributes to NSL&G for the first time with the debut of Vagina Painting (After Kubota), an homage to artist and Fluxus member Shigeko Kubota. Barry investigates the performative capacities of the human body through drawing, painting and performance art, considering the phenomenological experiences of queer, sexualized and gendered bodies in particular. She is interested in the body as both object and subject, as well as the tension in this duality.
TRACEY VATH contributes to NSL&G for the first time, presenting a new work entitled what a day that will be, using memory, humour, and religious hymn to call forth a feminist utopia. Vath is an artist and musician who recently rode the #20 bus in Vancouver for 10 days in a row, 12 hours each day. CARLOS COLÍN MORENO returns to NSL&G to screen video documentation of Trinkets (a 2012 work that rhetorically questions what/who defines art and benefits from it) and discusses the continued relevance of the project to his current practice. Colín is an interdisciplinary artist from Mexico City living and working in Vancouver, BC, since 2011. He is represented by Fazakas Gallery, and is a PhD candidate in Interdisciplinary Studies at UBC. As a Latin American artist, his research and practice allow him to investigate and inquire about how our everyday life, mostly in Latin America, is reflected and affected by elements and patterns of political, religious, social, and cultural activities since colonial times. Of primary focus for Colin are Baroque concepts in the Latin American region and how contemporary art manifests their inconvenient heritages.
