NOT SENT LETTERS & GUESTS form public constellations of engaged interdisciplinary practice, unmediated by the realpolitik conditions of contemporary art as a competitive professional sphere. The interrelatedness of art, society and everyday life is critically explored amongst a diverse plurality of artists and publics. Jeremy Todd instigates each event as an extension of his ongoing Not Sent Letters project, an entanglement with the production of meaning, self and cultural memory, involving image/text epistolary detours online (since 2005), digital shorts, interdisciplinary performance works and cooperatively realized public events.

This is the twenty-second NOT SENT LETTERS & GUESTS event.

CLINT BURNHAM, a Vancouver-based poet, novelist, theorist and critic (as well as a creator and performer of puppet shows, in collaboration with MARK LABA during the 1990s), contributes to NSL&G for the first time with a special reading of Stories for my iPad, a series of 100+ short short stories originally produced online in early 2015, appearing as png files on Clint’s since-suspended twitter account (a selection also appeared on joylandmagazine.com, and some photographs from the work were exhibited at CSA Space in 2016).

MARGARET DRAGU returns to NSL&G to debut A DANCER, AN ACTOR & A PERFORMANCE ARTIST WALK INTO A BAR, an exploration of how not to tell a joke and a deconstruction of the TV laugh-track, employing audience participation, embodied-collage-aktions and the projection of a silent video-poem by MO SIMPSON (utilizing moments from an all day performance exploration by DRAGU, MICHELLE LUI, DAVID MCINTOSH & EMILIO ROJAS).

IRWIN OOSTINDIE, INESSA BAUSTAD OOSTINDIE & DIRK OOSTINDIE contribute to NSL&G for the first time, inviting you to explore a Dutch youth’s 200km journey into hiding from Amsterdam’s Hongerwinter, his life eventually saved by Canadian soldiers on his 17th birthday, April 13, 1945.  71 years later, his 17 year-old granddaughter (and 49 year-old son) revisit his wartime story with the help of audio, archival images, social media, and video, bringing to life memory and archives for a new generation considering war and refugees.

BYRON PETERS contributes to NSL&G for the first time, debuting an audio-visual presentation from Anti-Racist Mathematics & Other Stories, a collection of tales from the history of mathematics, global power and communication technologies.  From the ‘science of revolt’ declared by Brad Werner and contextualized by Donna Haraway, the history of the algorithm from al-Khw?rizm?, Karl Marx’s mathematical manuscripts, to IBM’s present-day algorithm (cited to distinguish refugees from terrorists), these stories speculate on the make-up of technical languages and what they might become.

DAMLA TAMER & JEREMY TODD, two Vancouver-based interdisciplinary artists, continue a serialized public experiment with correspondence, friendship, and a seemingly fleeting private sphere.  Reduction, elaboration, mis- and over-interpretation become discursive strategies within an accumulative exchange and accounting of images and text, both revealing and defying the atomization of everyday life under capital.  This will be the third presentation at NSL&G to result from their collaboration.

JEREMY TODD presents a new NOT SENT LETTERS SET featuring live scoring by LEE HUTZULAK, digital projection and letters to Willing Conflators Of Spalding Gray And Jeremy Todd, The Middle Of Nowhere and Everyone Still Pretending, selected and read from the project archive by MARGARET DRAGU, BYRON PETERS & DAMLA TAMER.
