Guadalupe Martinez, Hank Bull, Francois Roux, Debra Zhou, Sarah Shamash, Makiko Hara & Friends perform Colin McLaine & Paul Pittman (of Shed) perform  through the green door Mark Dahl‘s statement about his performance work for the Cabaret:

Children’s literature and music is made by adults who don’t truly remember their childhood. These product are based on constructions of childhood. As children we encounter such books and songs in a very different, confused way. Our experience of childhood is informed by the influence of adults and the products they make FOR children. They make sense to us as adults who remember them from our own childhoods, but only in terms of what we universally understand to be Childhood and the genre ‘Children’s’. We remember clearly these products, but not so clearly our childhood experience. I found most children’s cultural products strange and confusing as a child.

The Idea with this performance is to address adults as children, making clear and strange the inconsistency and impossibility of our realization of human socialization in relation to cultural production. We may understand what we say to others, but we are perplexed as to what we are saying to ourselves.
